Flake Epoxy for Hot Tub/Patio Area

Flake Epoxy for Hot Tub/Patio Area Adding a Moisture Barrier for Hot Tub Patio

There isn’t a bad time of year to hot tub in the Poconos – and for this homeowner, they wanted to create the perfect space for their relaxation time. The boring and cracked concrete floor, while stable, did not provide the aesthetics or shine they were looking for – and that’s when the Swayd team stepped in!

Epoxy Flake flooring is one of the best ways to not only hide concrete patio imperfections but to enhance flooring with dimension and increase slip resistance in areas that receive moisture (ideal for areas subjected to rain or hot tub patios).

Process & Scope of Flake Epoxy Floor

Step 1: Prep and Initial Broadcast

The Swayd process always begins with an initial consult where we measure the dimensions of the project area to determine time and materials. We use the Mohs measuring devices to determine the hardness level. At this time, we also check moisture and temperature levels. If the concrete was newly poured, we would need to wait 30 days before beginning the epoxy process. We inspect the concrete for repair needs such as cracks, divots, control joints, or any other areas that require repairs. Fortunately, for this particular homeowner, the concrete was existing, so we were able to get right to work on the project.

After we had done the initial consult and design for this Poconos homeowner, it was time to begin. Step one was to prep the concrete patio for the epoxy flake floor system. This may be the most important step because if the concrete is not prepared properly or cleaned beforehand, the resin will not adhere. First, we begin by sandblasting or ‘roughing up’ the concrete. Ensuring all particles are removed or vacuumed up after this process is critical. We then prime with a moisture vapor barrier before the initial base coat of epoxy. This priming step helps the epoxy adhere to the concrete and prevents bubbling. When applying the base coat, we follow the manufacturer’s directions to ensure a perfect application.

While the epoxy base coat was still wet, we broadcasted the decorative flakes evenly onto the surface. We then allowed the flakes to embed into the epoxy.

Step 2: Curing and Top Coat

Depending on the manufacturer, we usually wait several hours (typically overnight) to allow the prime/base coats and first epoxy flakes to cure. Once the appropriate amount of time has passed, we remove any excess flakes using a floor scraper. Finally, we apply a clear poly aspartic sealer to enhance durability and provide UV protection to the epoxy coating over the flaked surface using a squeegee and a roller. This top coat will encapsulate the flakes and provide a protective layer.

We allow this top coat to cure for the recommended time before subjecting the surface to heavy traffic or other stresses.

A Beautiful Transformation

When all was said and done – shined and buffed – this homeowner had the perfect patio for hot tubbing! The floor has dimension, detail, and a beautiful sheen that will impress house guests for years to come. The before and after pictures speak for themselves!
